What if there was something you could right now that would have an immediate and long lasting positive benefit for your brain including mood and focus and it would also protect your brain from depression, Alzheimers and dementia, would you do it?

Being a fitness trainer for most of my life I can be a little obsessive about being healthy, it’s actually more than a job for me, it’s my lifestyle. No one knows this better than my husband, who is under my watchful eye and the receiver of my constant advice, warnings and chastising! (Even though he doesn’t seem to hear me most of the time 😉

Every once in a while though he’ll start giving me health advice, he reads a book a friend suggests or listens to a podcast that catches his attention and suddenly he’s transformed into a health advocate like me. So lately all I’m hearing about is the importance of sleep.

I’m so happy he’s finally onboard! Okay, I admit I can’t help but feel just a teeny bit of irritation that he’s now giving me the same advice that I’ve been giving him for decades as if he’s just heard it for the first time. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining! He’s finally going to bed earlier and making a concerted effort to get 8 hours a night. He’s not so exhausted after work and is in a much better mood overall. It’s actually been quite amazing!

So what had such a huge impact on my husband? He listened to this podcast (warning there is a bit of swearing, especially at the very beginning but then it dies down).

It’s an interview with Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at Berkeley University and founder and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science.

It’s fascinating and full of scientific facts about sleep, I highly recommend you take a listen.Or you can read all about it in his book Why We Sleep. You can get it at the library HERE

And here’s a short video I found:

Sweet Dreams!

As a wannabe minimalist, I’m constantly in cleaning-out mode, trying to get rid of stuff.

May this inspire you to do a little clean-out yourself (so funny!):

Are you like me? A little addicted to your phone?

In 2015, Manoush Zomorodi challenged the listeners of her podcast Note to Self to change their relationship with their phones. She led thousands through a week of experiments designed to help them reassess their technology habits, unplug for part of each week and jump-start their creativity.

It became a lesson in realizing that “doing nothing” is vital in life and that taking control of phone use is important so we can focus on what really matters to us.

I’m going to take the challenge!
(and try to convince my family to join me)
Will you join me?

Check out the Ted Talk and now there’s a new book (at vpl, audio).
